What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize a ruler and explain what it measures. They choose it when they need to find an object’s length, height, or width.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify a ruler when shown several tools. They explain that it finds how long, tall, or wide an object is.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a ruler with a number line or think it measures weight. They may name the marks but not connect the tool to finding length.

How to Assess It

Show a ruler, balance scale, and measuring cup. Ask, “Which tool would you use to find the length of a pencil, and why?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a ruler and five classroom objects, then have them choose three objects whose length the ruler can measure.

  2. Ask students to write one sentence explaining why a ruler works for a pencil but not for a cup of water.

  3. Play Tool Match: students match picture cards of objects to a ruler, balance scale, or measuring cup.

  4. Measure items for a class supply box, such as pencils and scissors, to check whether they will fit inside.
