Virginia SOL 2.CE.1.h
The Standard
Use inverse relationships to write all related facts connected to a given addition or subtraction fact model within 20 (e.g., given a model for 3 + 4 = 7, write 4 + 3 = 7, 7 – 4 = 3, and 7 – 3 = 4).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will recall with automaticity addition and subtraction facts within 20 and estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction with whole numbers where addends or minuends do not exceed 100.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the two parts and the total shown in a model. They use those three numbers to write related addition and subtraction equations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a picture or set of objects, students identify the two parts and the total. They write all distinct related equations accurately and explain how addition and subtraction undo each other.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a part with the total and write 3 − 7 = 4. They may reverse subtraction as if it works like addition, or introduce numbers not shown in the model.
How to Assess It
- Show 9 counters, with 6 blue and 3 yellow. Ask students to write every related addition and subtraction equation and circle the total in each.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two-color counters and a part-part-whole mat, then have them build 7 + 5 and record the related equations.
Ask students to explain why 12 − 5 = 7 belongs with 5 + 7 = 12.
Play a fact-family card sort using number triples, operation cards, and equation mats.
Show 14 apples split between two baskets, then have students write equations describing the baskets and the total.
