What Students Need to Do
- Students use objects, drawings, or paper models to split one whole fairly between two or four people. They show that every person receives the same-sized share.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a sharing problem, the student partitions a model into two or four equal parts and assigns one part to each person. The student spots an unfair partition and fixes it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any two or four pieces equal shares even when the pieces differ in size. They may confuse the number of cuts with the number of parts.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Four children share one rectangular brownie equally. Draw the shares, label each child’s part, and explain why the sharing is fair.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a paper sandwich, then have them fold and cut it so two toy figures receive equal shares.
Show equal and unequal pizza models, then ask, “Which sharing is fair, and how do you know?”
Play Fair Share Sort by grouping picture cards as fair for two, fair for four, or not fair.
Have students draw how one granola bar could be shared equally by two friends and then by four friends.
