What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why people move, including push and pull factors. They trace effects on both the place people leave and the place they enter, then examine how governments and communities respond.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a migration case, students identify several causes and support them with evidence. They explain positive and negative effects on origin and destination areas, then judge whether a response addresses the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all migration is voluntary or caused by one factor. They may focus only on destination countries or treat every effect as negative. Some think responses only involve closing borders.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Drought has ruined crops in one country, while a nearby country needs farmworkers. Identify one push factor, one pull factor, two impacts, and one possible response.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups migration case cards, string, and a world map to trace routes and label causes, impacts, and responses.
Discuss this prompt: When should a government limit migration, and what evidence should guide its decision?
Run a timed card sort in which teams classify examples as causes, origin impacts, destination impacts, or responses.
Use a recent local migration news article to identify who moved, why, what changed, and how leaders or groups responded.
