What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify why settlers moved into western territories and sort those reasons as geographic, economic, or religious. They connect motives to examples such as fertile land, trade, gold, or faith communities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a map, short source, or settler scenario, students name the motive and support their choice with evidence. They can explain when more than one motive influenced a move.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat geography as only a location rather than a reason, such as access to rivers or fertile land. They may assume every settler moved for the same reason or confuse religious motives with economic opportunity.
How to Assess It
- Give students three scenarios: a farmer seeking fertile soil, a merchant seeking trade, and a group building a faith community. Ask them to label each motive and explain one answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs an expansion map and motive cards, then have them place each card near a fitting region and explain the placement.
Ask students to write which motive would most influence their own move west and support the choice with two historical details.
Play Motive Match, where teams match settler scenarios to geographic, economic, or religious labels and earn points for accurate explanations.
Show a modern relocation advertisement, then have students compare its reasons for moving with reasons settlers moved west.
