What Students Need to Do: Students compare European voyages by purpose, travel difficulty, route, and result. They connect named explorers to sponsoring nations, territorial claims, trade networks, and settlements.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can place key voyages on a map and match each sponsoring nation with an explorer, goal, and result. The student explains common travel obstacles and compares two nations using accurate details.
Common Misconceptions: Students often assume every voyage sought only gold or reached its intended destination. They may confuse an explorer’s birthplace with the sponsoring nation, or treat exploration, conquest, and permanent settlement as the same event.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose two sponsoring nations. For each, name one voyage goal, one obstacle, and one result, then write one comparison sentence.

Lesson moves

Give groups explorer, nation, route, motive, obstacle, and result cards to sort, then have them defend two matches using a map.
Write: Which two voyages had similar goals but different results, and what evidence supports your comparison?
Run a map relay where teams place route strings and nation labels, then answer a motive or obstacle clue for each.
Students plan a modern ocean expedition, listing its purpose, three likely obstacles, and tools that address each obstacle.
