What Students Need to Do: Students identify when money, time, or materials are limited. They explain why makers and buyers must choose one option instead of having every option.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name the limited resource in a simple situation. The student can describe a producer’s choice, a consumer’s choice, and what each gives up.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think scarcity means there is none of something, rather than not enough for every use. They may also think only shoppers make choices, while businesses can make everything they want.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “A baker has enough flour for bread or muffins, and a customer has $3 for one item. Explain each person’s choice.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs 10 craft sticks to make toy fences or picture frames, then have them explain why they chose one product.
Ask, “If you have $5 for either a book or a snack, what would you choose, and what would you give up?”
Play a choice-card game where students draw limited-money cards, select goods or services, and name what they could not choose.
Compare two class party plans with one budget, then vote on which goods and services to buy and explain the tradeoff.
