What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a spoken word with three sounds and say the sound at the beginning, middle, or end. They work from speech, not printed letters.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given words such as map, sit, and fish, a student can name any requested sound without seeing the word. The student says each sound cleanly and in the correct position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a letter name instead of its sound. They often miss the middle vowel, omit the final sound, or add an extra vowel, such as saying /tuh/ for /t/.
How to Assess It
- Say, “Listen to map. Tell me the first sound, the middle sound, and the last sound.” Look for /m/, /ă/, and /p/.

Ways to Teach It
Give students three counters and picture cards; they push one counter per sound, then name the first, middle, and last sounds.
Ask, “Which sound changes when map becomes mop?” Students say both words slowly and explain that the middle sound changed.
Play Sound Spot: say a word and position; students point to the matching sound box and say the target sound.
Examine pictures of classroom objects such as pen, bag, and cup; students say each word and identify a requested sound.
