What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write a concluding statement or paragraph that closes a multi-paragraph text. They connect the ending to the main idea, synthesize key points, and avoid adding unrelated information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student writes a conclusion that clearly connects to the text’s focus and main points. The ending fits the purpose, uses fresh wording, and leaves the reader with a clear final thought.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often repeat the introduction word for word or end with a vague phrase such as “That is all.” Some add new evidence, change the claim, or write an ending that does not fit the text’s purpose.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write a three-sentence conclusion for an essay supporting later school start times. Restate the claim in fresh words, connect two reasons, and end without adding new evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed essay paragraphs and three possible endings; students select the best ending and annotate how it creates closure.
Ask students to compare two conclusions and write: Which ending feels complete, and what exact words connect it to the essay?
Play Conclusion Repair: teams revise weak endings that repeat the claim, use vague wording, or introduce new evidence.
Students write the closing paragraph for a principal’s email proposing one school change, ending with a clear next step.
