What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add precise details to basic sentences and place phrases or clauses within them. They vary sentence openings, lengths, and structures across a paragraph without losing clarity.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can revise repetitive sentences by adding meaningful phrases or clauses. The revised paragraph uses varied sentence structures while keeping ideas clear and logically connected.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think sentence variety means adding extra words or using longer sentences. They may join complete sentences with only a comma. They may embed so many details that the main idea becomes unclear.
How to Assess It
- Give students these sentences: “The storm arrived. The streets flooded. The game ended.” Ask them to create two clear sentences by expanding one idea and embedding another.

Give groups sentence strips with main clauses and detail phrases, then have them combine and rearrange the strips into clear, varied sentences.
