What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain a focused topic using accurate evidence from multiple credible sources. They select facts, definitions, details, quotations, and examples, then organize them with a pattern that clarifies connections.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong writer keeps every paragraph tied to a clear focus. The writer uses evidence from several credible sources and explains how each detail supports the topic. The chosen structure makes relationships among ideas easy to follow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect facts without connecting them to one clear focus. They may rely on one source, use weak websites, or insert quotations without explaining them. They may also choose an organizational pattern that does not fit the topic.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short source excerpts. Ask them to write one focused cause-and-effect paragraph using a fact from each source and explaining both facts.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups evidence cards from three sources to sort into cause, effect, example, definition, and quotation categories before drafting a paragraph.
Ask students which structure best explains school start times, then require them to defend their choice with two reasons.
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claims with relevant source details and reject details that are off-topic or weak.
Write a one-page community briefing that explains a local problem, its causes, and possible solutions using three credible sources.
