What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain a topic with accurate facts and details. They choose description, comparison, or cause-effect and use transitions to connect ideas clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student chooses a structure that fits the topic and arranges details in a clear order. Transitions show how ideas compare, connect, or cause results.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without showing how they connect. They may mix structures, use comparison words for causes, or add opinions instead of explaining the topic.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to write one paragraph explaining why traffic forms near the school entrance. Require a clear cause-effect structure and three linking words.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips about volcanoes to sort into description, comparison, or cause-effect, then arrange one set into a logical paragraph.
Ask students which structure best explains two school lunch choices, then have them defend their choice in three sentences.
Teams draw a topic card and structure card, write a four-sentence explanation, and challenge classmates to identify the structure.
Students map the causes of cafeteria line delays, then write a short cause-effect explanation for the principal.
