What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain a focused topic using accurate facts and specific details. They organize related ideas and use linking words to show how those ideas connect.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student states a clear focus, selects accurate facts, and adds details that explain each fact. Ideas follow a sensible order and connect with words such as because, also, for example, and however.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without grouping or explaining them. They may wander from the main focus, use opinions as facts, or repeat one linking word in every sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students three facts about animal camouflage. Ask them to write one focused paragraph that explains the topic and uses at least two linking words.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fact strips about volcanoes, then have them sort related facts and build a focused paragraph on chart paper.
Ask students to write: Which three facts best explain how bees help plants, and why does each fact belong?
Play Linking Word Match by pairing sentence cards with because, also, for example, however, or therefore, then reading each completed connection aloud.
Have students create a one-page guide explaining a school routine to a new student using facts, details, and linking words.
