What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a claim, conclusion, or inference about a challenging text and support it with several relevant details. They use accurate quotations or paraphrases and show where each detail appears.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select two or more strong details and explain how each one supports their thinking. They quote or paraphrase accurately and identify the page, paragraph, or line.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use one quotation and assume it proves the point without explanation. They may confuse paraphrasing with changing a few words or cite details that do not support the claim.
How to Assess It
- Give students a numbered passage and ask, “What can you infer about the speaker’s attitude?” Require a clear answer, two supporting details, and location references.

Ask students to write one inference about a character, cite two details, and explain how each detail supports the inference.
Play Evidence Relay, where teams race to locate, record, and defend the best evidence for a posted claim.
Compare two online product reviews, then decide which recommendation is better supported by specific facts from the reviews.
