What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use recently learned words accurately in both speaking and writing. They apply each word in more than one situation instead of repeating a memorized example.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses a new word naturally in both a class discussion and a separate writing task. The meaning, word form, and grammar fit each context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a new word because it sounds impressive, even when its meaning does not fit. They may repeat one memorized sentence or use the wrong word form.
How to Assess It
- Give students one class vocabulary word. Have them write a sentence about the current text, then use the word in a 20-second partner explanation on another topic.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs vocabulary cards and situation cards, then have them create and share a sentence that fits each matched pair.
Ask students to discuss a character’s choice using two new words, then write a short claim using the same words differently.
Play Context Switch, where teams use one vocabulary word correctly in school, sports, family, and story sentences.
Have students rewrite a school announcement, text message, or email using three new words while keeping the message clear.
