What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use recently learned words in more than one speaking and writing situation. They choose forms and meanings that fit the topic, audience, and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use new words accurately and naturally in discussion and writing. They adjust word form, tone, and meaning to fit different audiences and situations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may force a word into a sentence because they recognize its definition. They may also use the wrong form, tone, or collocation for the context.
How to Assess It
- Give students three recently learned words. Ask them to use one in a class discussion response and another in a two-sentence exit ticket about a different topic.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs vocabulary cards and scenario cards, then have them match each word to two scenarios and explain each choice aloud.
Ask students to discuss: Which new word best describes a character’s decision, and why is it more precise than a common synonym?
Play Vocabulary Switch, where students revise a sentence with a target word, then adapt it for a new audience or purpose.
Have students write a workplace email and a social media caption using the same new word appropriately in both contexts.
