What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whether a literary text is a story, poem, or drama. They point to structural clues such as chapters, stanzas, dialogue, scenes, and stage directions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given unfamiliar excerpts, students classify each genre and cite two features that support each choice. They use terms such as stanza, scene, narrator, and stage direction accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label any text with dialogue as a drama. They may confuse a poem's line breaks with sentences, or a narrator with a character. They may name the genre without citing structural evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students one short story excerpt, poem, and drama scene. Ask: “Name each genre and underline two structural features that prove your answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Cut apart three short texts, then have pairs sort them by genre and label the structural clues with sticky notes.
Ask students to compare a poem and drama: “How does each text's structure tell the reader how to read it?”
Play Genre Detective: teams earn a point by identifying an excerpt and another by naming a structural feature as evidence.
Compare a song lyric, audiobook story, and play script, then discuss how each structure guides a performer's voice.
