What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students collect information from books, articles, and websites, then group related facts. They decide which details answer the question and which sources are trustworthy. They combine useful facts into clear notes or explanations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students sort notes by topic and remove details that do not answer the question. They identify trustworthy sources and combine information from multiple sources in their own words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume the first search result is trustworthy or that an interesting detail is relevant. They may copy facts without combining them or checking the author, date, and evidence.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to use two class sources to select one reliable, relevant fact from each. Have them combine both facts into one original sentence and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs source cards to place on a relevant and reliable grid, then have them combine two strong facts in a note.
Ask students to write: Which source would you trust most, and what details helped you decide?
Play Source Detective by having teams score short sources for author, date, evidence, and connection to the research question.
Plan a class garden using a seed catalog, an extension office webpage, and an anonymous post, then choose facts worth using.
