ELA4th GradeDeveloping Skilled Readers and Building Reading Stamina

The Standard

When responding to texts through discussion and/or writing, draw several pieces of evidence from grade-level complex texts to support claims, conclusions, and inferences, including quoting or paraphrasing from texts accurately and tracing where relevant evidence is located (Textual Evidence, K-12).

Virginia Standards of Learning for English · The student will build knowledge and comprehension skills from reading a range of challenging, content-rich texts. This includes fluently reading and gathering evidence from grade-level complex texts, reading widely on topics to gain purposeful knowledge and vocabulary, and using reading strategies when comprehension breaks down.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students answer questions or make claims about a challenging text using several supporting details. They quote or paraphrase those details accurately and show where each one appears.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students make a clear claim or inference and support it with several relevant details. They quote or paraphrase accurately and name the page, paragraph, or section containing each detail.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose details that relate to the topic but do not support their claim. They may copy long sections, paraphrase inaccurately, or omit where they found the evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students a one-page passage and ask, “What can you infer about the main character? Support your answer with two details and label each paragraph.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs evidence cards to sort under three claims, then have them mark the strongest two details with sticky notes.

  2. Ask, “Which character made the wiser choice?” Students write a claim, cite two details, and explain how each supports their answer.

  3. Run an evidence hunt where teams locate details for a posted inference and record each page or paragraph before time ends.

  4. Read two short product reviews, then have students recommend one product using accurate evidence from both reviews.
