What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who or what each sentence is about. They choose a verb form that matches whether the subject names one or more than one.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct verb for singular and plural subjects, even when other nouns appear nearby. They can find and fix agreement errors in their own sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add an s to both a plural subject and its verb, as in "The dogs runs." They may also confuse has and have, or was and were.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: "Circle the correct verb: The basket of apples (sit, sits) on the table. Explain your choice."

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs noun cards and verb cards, then have them build and read six sentences with matching singular or plural forms.
Ask students to compare "The dogs runs" and "The dogs run," then write why one sentence sounds right.
Play Agreement Four Corners by labeling corners is, are, has, and have, then reading sentence stems for students to complete.
Have students proofread three classroom announcements, correcting mismatched subjects and verbs before posting the revised versions.
