What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students analyze how a speaker opens, organizes, supports, and closes a presentation. They identify effective choices and weaknesses, then explain their judgments with specific examples.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain how each part supports or weakens the speaker’s purpose. The student cites exact moments, separates evidence from reasoning, and responds constructively to classmates’ evaluations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mistake confident delivery or polished slides for strong content. They often give vague praise, confuse evidence with reasoning, or overlook whether the conclusion follows from the main claim.

How to Assess It

Play a three-minute recorded presentation. Students complete six boxes labeled opening, organization, evidence, reasoning, strength, and weakness, citing one specific example in each.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a cut-up presentation transcript and have them arrange the opening, claims, evidence, reasoning, and conclusion into the strongest order.

  2. Ask students to write: Which presentation choice most strengthened the message, and which change would improve it most?

  3. Run a presentation review relay where teams identify one strength or weakness per category before passing the scorecard.

  4. Evaluate a short city council proposal video, then decide whether its evidence and reasoning justify the requested action.
