What Students Need to Do: Students craft an opening for a longer essay that gives readers enough background to understand the issue. They state a precise, arguable claim and map the main points the essay will cover.
What Mastery Looks Like: A strong introduction names the issue, supplies relevant context, and narrows toward a focused thesis. Its final sentences signal the essay’s main sections in a logical order.
Common Misconceptions: Students often begin with a broad cliché, a dictionary definition, or background that never connects to the claim. They may name a topic instead of making an arguable claim, or list body points that do not match the essay’s structure.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: For the prompt “Should high schools require community service?” write a four-sentence introduction with context, a clear position, and two ordered points.

Lesson moves

Give groups sentence strips from a model introduction, then have them arrange the context, thesis, and preview in the strongest order.
Compare two openings for the same essay and write which better prepares the reader, citing the thesis and preview.
