What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice when a difficult passage stops making sense. They pause and use a fitting strategy, such as mapping the structure, summarizing, questioning, or rereading with a clear purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can notice when meaning breaks down and choose a useful response. They can identify the passage structure, ask focused questions, and summarize the main idea with accurate evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reread the same lines without changing their approach. They may copy details instead of summarizing the main point. They may name a structure from one signal word without checking how the whole passage is organized.

How to Assess It

Give students a challenging 200-word passage. Ask them to mark where meaning became unclear, name the strategy they used, and write a two-sentence summary.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cut-up editorial; students rebuild it, underline transition clues, and name the organizational pattern that guided their choices.

  2. Ask students to write: Where did your understanding break down, which strategy did you choose, and what became clearer?

  3. Play Strategy Match: teams draw a difficult paragraph and choose the best move from cards labeled summarize, question, map, or reread.

  4. Students examine a phone contract, map its headings and exceptions, then summarize one fee rule in plain language for a classmate.
