What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students take part in extended discussions with different classmates about texts and grade-level issues. They listen closely, respond to specific ideas, speak with a clear purpose, and disagree respectfully.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students build on or challenge ideas after accurately summarizing what others said. They use relevant evidence, ask useful questions, share speaking time, and keep a respectful tone.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat listening as waiting for their turn or repeat a point without adding to it. They may mistake disagreement for disrespect or speak without using evidence from the text.

How to Assess It

Give pairs a claim from the class text and three minutes to discuss it. Check whether each student paraphrases a partner, responds with evidence, and disagrees respectfully.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups discussion-role cards, then have students rotate as facilitator, paraphraser, evidence finder, and questioner during a short text discussion.

  2. Ask students to write and discuss: How can you disagree with an idea while showing respect for the speaker?

  3. Play discussion bingo with squares such as paraphrase, ask a follow-up question, cite evidence, invite a speaker, and challenge an idea respectfully.

  4. Hold a mock workplace meeting where teams choose a school improvement, respond to competing views, and agree on one evidence-based recommendation.
