What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students say how a noun changes when it names more than one person, place, animal, or thing. They choose an ending that sounds right, as in “cats” or “buses.”
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately changes familiar nouns when talking about more than one. The student says words such as “books,” “dogs,” and “dishes” clearly in complete sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add the same ending sound to every word, saying “bus-s” instead of “buses.” They may also overapply the pattern to irregular nouns, such as “foots” or “childs.”
How to Assess It
- Show four picture pairs, such as one cat and three cats. Point to each pair and ask the student to say, “I see one ___” and “I see three ___.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students object cards and counters, then have them place one or several counters beside each card and say the matching noun.
Ask partners, “What objects do you see more than one of in our classroom?” and have them answer in complete sentences.
Play Plural Toss by tossing a ball, naming one object, and having the catcher say the word for several objects.
Use a classroom supply hunt where students find groups of pencils, boxes, books, or brushes and report what they found aloud.
