What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather evidence from plant investigations and use a simple model to explain food production. They identify sunlight as the energy source, then trace matter from water and carbon dioxide into sugar and plant tissue.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can label a plant diagram with water entering through roots, carbon dioxide entering leaves, and light reaching leaves. The student identifies sugar as food and oxygen as a released product.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often say roots absorb food from soil or that sunlight itself is food. They may treat sunlight as matter, forget that carbon dioxide enters leaves, or think plants only produce oxygen.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a plant with arrows showing where light, water, and carbon dioxide enter, then circle the items that are matter. Explain how that matter becomes plant food.

Ways to Teach It
Set up two Elodea cups with bicarbonate water, place one under a lamp and cover one, then compare oxygen bubbles after 20 minutes.
Write a claim answering, “Where does most of a tree’s new mass come from?” Use carbon dioxide and water as evidence.
Sort cards labeled sunlight, water, carbon dioxide, sugar, oxygen, roots, and leaves into input, output, entry point, or energy groups.
Give students a greenhouse scenario with weak light, dry soil, or low carbon dioxide, then have them predict how plant growth changes.
