What Students Need to Do

Students look for how numbers, operations, models, and strategies are related. They connect ideas across objects, drawings, equations, and words, then explain those connections clearly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can connect an equation to a drawing, number line, table, or set of objects. The student explains the connection using clear math words and points to evidence in each representation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may describe what they did without explaining why the numbers or representations are connected. They may also treat equations, drawings, and objects as separate answers instead of matching forms of the same idea.

How to Assess It

Give students 8 + 7 = 15 and a ten-frame drawing. Ask, “How does the drawing show the equation? Explain one connection.”
