What Students Need to Do: Students listen to or read words and form a picture in their minds. They draw or describe that picture and connect its details to the text with adult prompts.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student listens to a short passage and draws or describes a matching scene. With a prompt, the student points to words that shaped the picture.
Common Misconceptions: Students may draw only what appears in an illustration instead of using details from the words. They may add unrelated details or think everyone must picture the same scene.
How to Assess It: Read, “A tiny brown mouse curled up inside a warm red mitten.” Ask students to draw the scene and name two words that guided their picture.

Lesson moves

Read a short description without showing pictures, then have students draw the setting with crayons and label one detail.
Ask, “What did you picture when you heard the rain tapping on the roof, and which words helped you?”
Play Picture Match by reading description cards while students choose the matching image and explain one clue.
Describe a familiar place, such as the cafeteria or playground, and have students sketch what they picture before visiting it.
