Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students choose something they want to write about. They talk through the idea with classmates or the teacher, then sketch details they can use in writing.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name a clear topic, share one or two details aloud, and make a drawing that matches the idea. The drawing gives a useful starting point for writing.
Common Misconceptions: Some students draw a favorite object but cannot explain what they want to say about it. Others copy a classmate's idea or spend all their time coloring instead of adding useful details.
How to Assess It: Give each student a half-sheet and say, "Think of something fun you did. Tell a partner, then draw the people, place, and action."

Lesson moves

Place familiar objects in a mystery bag; each child selects one, tells a possible story, and sketches the object in a setting.
Ask, "What happened before, during, and after recess?" Chart children's ideas, then have each child draw one moment.
Play Topic Toss: children pass a soft ball, name a writing idea when music stops, then sketch their favorite idea.
Plan a thank-you note to the custodian by discussing helpful actions and drawing one action to include.
