What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a focused angle instead of writing generally about a broad topic. They develop that angle with relevant facts, examples, and details that show careful thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student develops one focused idea with relevant facts, examples, and precise details. The student explains why the details matter and removes information that distracts from the main point.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add many facts that do not support the main idea. They may also list details without explaining them or choose a topic that is too broad.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Describe one change that would improve our classroom. Write five sentences with one focused idea, three specific details, and an explanation of why one detail matters.
