What Students Need to Do: Students put together details from across a text, illustrations, and what they already know. They use those connections to form an idea that is not stated directly.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect details from different parts of a text and explain the larger idea those details suggest. They support that idea with accurate evidence and relevant prior knowledge.
Common Misconceptions: Students may retell separate facts without explaining how they connect. They may also give an opinion that is not supported by the text or repeat one sentence as their new idea.
How to Assess It: Give students a short passage and ask, “What new idea can you make by putting two details together?” Require two supporting details.

Lesson moves

Give pairs three detail cards from a familiar story, then have them arrange the cards and state one larger idea the details support.
Read two short sections aloud, then ask, “What can we understand now that we could not understand from either section alone?”
Play Detail Match by having students pair related sentence strips and earn a point for stating a supported new idea.
Compare two playground rule signs, then have students combine the information to write one clear safety reminder for younger students.
