What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students handle and compare pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. They begin identifying pennies and dimes by visible features while becoming familiar with all four coins.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student reliably selects a penny or dime from a small mixed group and names it. The student explores nickels and quarters without being expected to identify every coin consistently yet.

Common Misconceptions

Students may identify coins only by size or assume larger coins always have greater value. They may confuse a dime with a penny when focusing on color alone.

How to Assess It

Place pennies, dimes, nickels, and quarters on a tray. Ask the student to find a penny and a dime, then describe one visible feature of each.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort real or plastic coins by color, size, edge, and picture, then locate pennies and dimes in each group.

  2. Ask students what features help them tell a penny from a dime.

  3. Play penny-and-dime hunt within a mixed tray that also includes nickels and quarters.

  4. Explore which coins appear in a pretend class store without requiring students to calculate their values.
