What Students Need to Do: Students handle and compare pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. They begin identifying pennies and dimes by visible features while becoming familiar with all four coins.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student reliably selects a penny or dime from a small mixed group and names it. The student explores nickels and quarters without being expected to identify every coin consistently yet.
Common Misconceptions: Students may identify coins only by size or assume larger coins always have greater value. They may confuse a dime with a penny when focusing on color alone.
How to Assess It: Place pennies, dimes, nickels, and quarters on a tray. Ask the student to find a penny and a dime, then describe one visible feature of each.

Lesson moves
