What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect counting forward with addition and counting backward with subtraction. They use a known starting number and count the amount being added or removed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student solves 8 + 3 by saying 9, 10, 11 and solves 11 - 3 by saying 10, 9, 8. The student explains how each count matches the operation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the starting number as the first added step or lose track of how many counts they made. They may count in the wrong direction for the operation.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 7 + 4 and 12 minus 4 by counting, then explain where they started and how many steps they took.

Move a token forward or backward on a number path while counting each added or removed step.
Ask students why counting for 6 + 3 begins with 7 rather than repeating 6.
