What Students Need to Do: Students solve quadratic equations in one variable in Algebra I using a method suited to the equation. Solutions may require simplifying radicals.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student chooses factoring, square roots, completing the square, or the quadratic formula appropriately. Both solutions are checked, and radical answers are simplified exactly when possible.
Common Misconceptions: Students may lose one root, forget the plus-or-minus in a square-root step, or use factoring when integer factors do not exist. They may approximate before giving an exact radical form.
How to Assess It: Ask students to solve 2x squared minus 4x minus 3 equals zero exactly, simplify the radicals, and check both solutions.
