What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students say number names in order from a given starting number, rather than always beginning at 1. They continue in either direction and identify what comes just before or after a number.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can start at 46 and say the next ten numbers in order. The student can also start at 63 and say the previous ten numbers, including across a decade.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may skip numbers in the teens or repeat a number. They often struggle at decade changes, such as moving from 39 to 40 or from 50 to 49.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to count from 58 to 66, then from 42 to 34. Note any skipped, repeated, or out-of-order numbers.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs numeral cards and a floor number line. One student chooses a start card, and the other moves a counter forward or backward.
Ask, "What happens to the ones digit when we count past 29 or back from 40?" Partners explain using a hundred chart.
Play Number Chain. Name a starting number and direction, then students take turns saying one number until someone reaches the target.
Run a classroom countdown from 30 before cleanup, then count forward as 10 objects are returned to their places.
