Georgia 2.NR.1.2
The Standard
Count forward and backward by ones from any number within 1000. Count forward by fives from multiples of 5 within 1000. Count forward and backward by 10s and 100s from any number within 1000. Count forward by 25s from 0.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Using the place value structure, explore the count sequences to represent, read, write, and compare numerical values to 1000 and describe basic place-value relationships and structures.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students extend number sequences from a given starting number and move in the correct direction by a fixed amount. They move forward by 1, 5, 10, 25, or 100, and backward by 1, 10, or 100.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student counts through boundaries, such as 397, 398, 399, 400. The student preserves the ones digit when moving by tens and the last two digits when moving by hundreds. The student also produces accurate sequences such as 235, 240, 245 and 0, 25, 50, 75.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often skip or repeat numbers when crossing 399 to 400 or moving backward from 700 to 699. When stepping by tens or hundreds, they may change the wrong place. They may also count 0, 25, 45 instead of adding 25 each time.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: write the next two numbers after 398, 399; 402, 401; 465, 470; 347, 337; 612, 712; 912, 812; and 0, 25.

Ways to Teach It
Build 286 with base-ten blocks, then add or remove ones, tens, and hundreds while recording each new number.
Post 438, 448, 458 and ask students to explain why the ones digit stays 8 using a place-value chart.
Play Sequence Relay: teams draw prepared start, step, and direction cards, then write six correct numbers before passing the marker.
Use play coins to count quarter-dollar totals from $0 to $2, recording 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 cents.
