What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use controlled pencil movements to print recognizable letters in the correct sequence. They write familiar words and their full name with clear spacing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student independently prints familiar words with recognizable letters in the correct order. The student writes both names clearly, using steady size, direction, and spacing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse letters, leave out letters, or put letters in the wrong order. They may mix capital and lowercase letters or leave no space between names.

How to Assess It

Give each student a blank name card and ask them to print their full name without tracing. Check letter order, recognizable formation, and spacing.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build each name with letter tiles, then copy it onto lined paper using a pencil.

  2. Ask students to write, “My name is ___,” then circle the letter they form best.

  3. Play Roll and Write, where students roll a picture cube and print the matching word.

  4. Have students create a labeled cubby card with their full name and a small self-portrait.
