What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a complex topic into focused questions that guide research. They find credible, relevant sources and use evidence from them to build an analysis rather than a summary.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a focused, open-ended question that can guide a manageable investigation. They select relevant sources, explain why each is credible, and connect evidence from multiple sources to their analysis.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a broad topic or search phrase as a research question. They may trust the first search result, assume certain domains are always reliable, or collect quotations without analyzing them.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sources about school start times. Ask them to write one focused research question, choose the stronger source, and justify the choice with two credibility checks.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed source cards to sort by credibility, then label each choice with author, evidence, date, and publication checks.
Ask students to revise the question “Is social media bad?” into a focused question, then explain what evidence would answer it.
Run a question ladder game where teams turn broad topics into focused, open-ended questions and earn points for clarity and researchability.
Have students investigate a school issue and write a short recommendation to the principal using evidence from two credible local sources.
