What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose similes, metaphors, personification, or other comparisons that fit their purpose. They explain how a phrase shapes the reader’s picture, feeling, or understanding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can revise a plain statement with figurative language that creates a clear mood or image. The student can explain why the chosen phrase fits the message and audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any unusual phrase counts, even when it does not support the intended effect. They may mix comparisons or take figurative phrases literally. They may identify a simile or metaphor but struggle to create one that fits the purpose.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite “The rain fell on the playground” to make the storm seem threatening, using one figurative expression. Underline it and explain its effect.

Ways to Teach It
Place ordinary objects in paper bags, then have pairs describe each object with a comparison that makes it seem appealing or frightening.
Write two descriptions of recess, one joyful and one gloomy, then explain how each figurative phrase creates its effect.
Play Effect Match by pairing figurative language cards with purpose cards such as create humor, show speed, or build suspense.
Collect figurative phrases from advertisements or weather reports, then rewrite one phrase to create a different effect.
