What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose reading and writing topics that connect to their interests or current class learning. They read suitable texts and create writing that builds on those topics.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently choose an appropriate text and explain how it fits an interest or class topic. They read it with purpose and create a connected response or text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a book only because of its cover, length, or pictures. They may think school topics cannot connect to their interests, or write something unrelated to what they read.
How to Assess It
- Offer four short texts about a current class topic. Ask students to choose one, read a page, then write why they chose it and one related idea.

Ways to Teach It
Set out books on one class topic, then have students sort them by personal interest and choose one to read.
Ask students to write: Which class topic would you like to read more about, and what would you write afterward?
Play Topic Match by pairing book cards with interest cards or class-topic cards, then explaining each match.
Have students choose a school topic, read a related library text, and create a fact card for a class display.
