What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use words such as “myself,” “herself,” “itself,” and “themselves” when the action points back to the subject. They match each pronoun to the correct person or group.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the pronoun that matches the subject in number and person. They write sentences such as “We made the cards ourselves” and “The cat cleaned itself.”
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say “hisself” or “theirselves” instead of “himself” or “themselves.” They may also use “myself” when “I” or “me” is needed.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “Maya painted the sign by ____.” Ask them to fill in the blank and explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs subject cards and pronoun cards, then have them match “I” with “myself,” “we” with “ourselves,” and other correct pairs.
Ask students to write three sentences about tasks they can do by themselves, then circle each reflexive pronoun.
Play pronoun bingo by reading sentence frames aloud while students cover the reflexive pronoun that correctly completes each frame.
Have students create classroom safety signs using sentences such as “Protect yourself” and “We clean the tables ourselves.”
