What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select a structure, such as problem and solution, cause and effect, or braided narrative, to fit their purpose and readers. They use section order, headings, transitions, lists, and visuals to guide readers and create a chosen effect.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can organize the same material differently for two audiences and explain why each version works. The final draft has a clear progression, useful navigation features, and no misplaced or decorative sections.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often default to five paragraphs even when another structure would work better. They may confuse organization with surface formatting. They may add headings or visuals that do not help readers navigate the ideas.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students six shuffled paragraphs from a short argument. Ask them to order the paragraphs, add two reader-friendly features, and justify their choices for a named audience and purpose.

Ways to Teach It
Print and cut apart a short article; groups reorder sections, add headings, and annotate how each choice guides readers.
Compare a news report and an editorial on the same issue, then write which organizational choices suit each audience and purpose.
Play a structure relay: teams arrange paragraph cards into the clearest sequence, then earn points by defending transitions and text features.
Redesign a school policy page for students and families using sections, bullets, links, and a brief FAQ.
