What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Before reading, students say why they are reading and what they want to learn or practice. While reading, they notice when meaning breaks down and try a helpful strategy.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names a clear reason for reading and chooses a simple goal. During reading, the student notices confusion and rereads, slows down, checks pictures, or asks a question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the goal is simply to finish the page or read every word quickly. They may keep going when meaning is lost, or guess from pictures without checking the words.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short illustrated passage. Ask them to name a reading goal, read aloud, and show what they do when one sentence becomes confusing.

Ways to Teach It
Give students sticky notes to mark one confusing spot in a short book, then reread that page and explain what helped.
Ask, "Why are you reading this book, and what will you do if a part does not make sense?"
Play Strategy Match by pairing confusion cards, such as unknown word or lost meaning, with reread, picture check, slow down, or ask.
Read a simple recipe together, set the goal of finding each step, and stop to fix any confusing direction.
