What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen for syllable beats in spoken words. They count, separate, and blend those word parts aloud.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately count and separate syllables in familiar spoken words. They can blend spoken syllables into a word without relying on print.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count letters or individual sounds instead of syllable beats. They may also split blends, such as hearing “stop” as two syllables, or miss an unstressed syllable.

How to Assess It

Say “sunset,” “banana,” and “fish.” Ask the student to place one counter for each syllable, then blend “pic-nic” into a whole word.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards and counters, then have them place one counter for each syllable they say.

  2. Ask, “How do you know banana has three syllables?” Students explain and mark each spoken beat with a dot.

  3. Play Syllable Sort Race by having teams sort picture cards into one, two, and three-syllable hoops.

  4. Use classmates’ names to build a chart showing names with one, two, three, or four syllables.
