What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen for the word parts, or beats, in spoken words. They count, separate, blend, add, or remove syllables without using printed words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately count and separate syllables in familiar spoken words. They can blend parts such as “sun” and “set,” then remove one part to make a new word.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count letters or individual sounds instead of spoken beats. They may also clap extra times for stretched vowels or have trouble separating syllables in unfamiliar words.

How to Assess It

Say “rabbit,” “sunset,” and “banana.” Ask students to count the syllables, split each word, then say “sunset” without “sun.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students counters to push forward for each syllable they hear in picture-card words.

  2. Ask, “How many beats are in your name, and what parts do you hear?”

  3. Play Syllable Sort by placing picture cards under one, two, or three-syllable headings.

  4. Have students count syllables in classroom object names, such as pencil, notebook, chair, and computer.
