What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare how biologists, geologists, and physicists gather and analyze evidence. They explain why field observations, controlled tests, models, measurements, or historical records fit different scientific questions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can match a scientific question to a suitable method and tool. They can explain how the resulting evidence supports an explanation and identify limits in the method.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every investigation follows one fixed set of steps or requires a controlled experiment. They may also confuse tools with methods or assume observations are less useful than experiments.

How to Assess It

Give students one biology, geology, and physics question. Ask them to name a suitable method for each and explain why it fits.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations where students examine leaves, compare rock-layer photos, and time toy cars on ramps, then record the method used.

  2. Ask students to write which methods they would use to study bird migration, an ancient volcano, and a rolling ball.

  3. Give teams question, method, tool, and evidence cards to match, then award a point for each accurate explanation.

  4. Have students plan how biologists, geologists, and physicists could each help investigate damage after a local hurricane.
