Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.AR.3.6

MathGrades 9–12Write, solve and graph quadratic equations, functions and inequalities in one and two variables.

The Standard

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine the vertex and zeros of a quadratic from an expression or equation. They connect those features to the situation, including units, maximum or minimum values, and meaningful input values.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students find the vertex and zeros accurately from an equation, graph, or equivalent form. They explain each value using the quantities and units in the problem and reject solutions that do not fit the context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may swap the vertex coordinates or treat the y-intercept as a zero. They may also report both zeros when only one makes sense in the situation, such as a negative time.

How to Assess It

Give students h(t) = -16t² + 48t for a launched object. Ask them to find and interpret the vertex and both zeros, then identify which zero answers when the object lands.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use tiles to build a quadratic area model, then connect its dimensions to zeros and its completed-square form to the vertex.

  2. Ask students to explain: What do the vertex and zeros mean on a graph showing profit versus items sold?

  3. Play a matching game with quadratic equations, graphs, vertex cards, zero cards, and short context descriptions.

  4. Model a ball's height with a quadratic, then interpret the maximum height, time at maximum height, and landing time.
