What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine text clues with relevant background knowledge to figure out ideas the author does not state directly. They explain their thinking with specific evidence from the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students draw a reasonable conclusion about a character, event, or idea that is not directly stated. They cite specific details and explain how those details support the conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess based on personal opinions instead of using text evidence. They may repeat an explicit detail rather than draw a conclusion. Some choose evidence that is related but does not support their idea.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: "Maya tucked the permission slip under a stack of papers when her father entered. What can you infer, and which detail supports it?"

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs clue cards from a mystery passage, then have them sort the clues and build a supported conclusion with sticky notes.
Ask students to write: "What can you infer about the character, and which two details support your thinking?"
Play Inference Match by having students pair conclusion cards with supporting detail cards, then defend each match to a partner.
Examine a weather alert or product review and infer what action a reader should take, citing two details.
