What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-level stories, drama, and poetry closely. They analyze literary elements, themes, perspective, structure, imagery, and figurative language, using text evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain how characters, setting, plot, perspective, and language work together. They support an interpretation with well-chosen evidence and clear reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize events instead of explaining how literary elements shape meaning. They may name a theme, image, or point of view without citing details that develop it.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and ask: How does one literary element shape the meaning? Support your answer with two details.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups event, setting, character, and theme cards to arrange into a cause-and-effect chain, then explain each connection.
Ask students to write: How would the text's meaning change if another character narrated it?
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair analysis claims with the strongest quotations from a shared passage.
Compare a poem about a public event with a news report, then identify how imagery and perspective change the reader's response.
