What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read a suitable sixth-grade passage accurately, at a steady pace, and with phrasing that matches meaning and punctuation. They may read aloud, sign, or use another established communication mode.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student recognizes most words without stopping, groups words into meaningful phrases, and adjusts tone, emphasis, and pace. After brief practice, the reading sounds natural and remains accurate.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat fluency as speed, rush through punctuation, or read every word in the same tone. They may guess unfamiliar words from the first letter instead of decoding and rereading.

How to Assess It

Give each student a 100-word passage matched to their reading level. After one minute to preview, have them read or sign while you mark errors, pauses, phrasing, and expression.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Mark slashes for phrase breaks and circle punctuation on a printed passage, then perform the passage using those cues.

  2. Compare two recordings of the same paragraph and write which sounds clearer, citing pace, accuracy, phrasing, and expression.

  3. Play Phrase Relay: partners alternate reading sentence chunks, earning a point for accurate words, smooth phrasing, and punctuation-based expression.

  4. Rehearse and deliver a school announcement, podcast script, or directions so listeners can understand every word on the first hearing.
